習(xí)語是指帶有濃厚的民族色彩和地方色彩的約定俗成的固定短語或短句，它是一種受文化影響而形成的語言形式，經(jīng)過千錘百煉，言簡意賅，意象鮮明生動，充分反映一個民族的文化特點。

一、漢、英習(xí)語語義的不對應(yīng)性

由于經(jīng)濟體系、社會體系和觀念體系差別很大，漢、英習(xí)語所包含的文化信息不同，而讀者由于受到不同文化背景的影響對習(xí)語產(chǎn)生的聯(lián)想意義的理解也不盡相同。這樣就形成了漢、英習(xí)語語義上的不對應(yīng)性或不完全對應(yīng)性。

1.漢、英習(xí)語指稱意義的不對應(yīng)性

中西文化差異可以導(dǎo)致兩種不對應(yīng)或不完全對應(yīng)的指稱意義:譯語文化中不存在原語中的指稱對象;譯語文化中的可比對象與原語中的指稱對象有明顯的不同。

例如，漢語中的“阿Q精神”和英語中的“Shylock''''，分別來自魯迅的《阿Q正傳》及莎士比亞的MerchantofVen-ice(《威尼斯商人》)。阿Q是“精神勝利法”的典型，受了屈辱，不敢正視，反而自我安慰，說自己是“勝利者”;而“Shy_lock''''壩紐是個極度吝音的高利貸者。這兩個人物在各自文化中家喻戶曉，因此人們賦予了這兩個詞以指稱意義，并在現(xiàn)實生活中加以應(yīng)用。但是對于其他民族的人們來說，這種指稱意義并不存在。

2.漢、英習(xí)語聯(lián)想意義的不對應(yīng)性

中西文化的差異所導(dǎo)致的漢英習(xí)語聯(lián)想意義的不對應(yīng)性體現(xiàn)在三方面:具有聯(lián)想意義的指稱對象不為另一文化所熟悉;兩文化具有相同的指稱意義，但一個有聯(lián)想意義，一個卻沒有聯(lián)想意義;兩文化具有相同的指稱意義，但聯(lián)想意義不同。

例如，漢語有體現(xiàn)中國傳統(tǒng)思想的“不孝有三，無后為大”和“多子多福”等習(xí)語，這源于中國的宗族觀念、家庭觀念非常強烈。對于以個人為中心，家庭觀念比較淡漠的西方人來說，這是很難理解的。

再如，“這里沒有什么油水了”這個習(xí)語，中國人的飲食習(xí)慣導(dǎo)致中國人好油，中國人烹飪的大部分菜肴中離不開油，因此油就有了“值得一取的東西”的內(nèi)涵意義。而對于以英語為母語的國家，人們認(rèn)為油可以使人發(fā)胖，因此他們的飲食以清淡為主。對于他們來說，無論如何也無法將油與“值得一取的東西”聯(lián)系起來。

在英語中有“aswiseasanowl"這一習(xí)語，可見貓頭鷹在英語民族中是智慧的象征。而在中國文化中，貓頭鷹卻被認(rèn)為是不吉利的，認(rèn)為貓頭鷹會帶來厄運。這種語義的不對應(yīng)主要是由于觀念體系的差異造成的。

二、習(xí)語翻譯的錯誤類型

習(xí)語具有強烈的文化特征，是語言的核心與精華。習(xí)語翻譯實際上是如何在譯人語中處理由譯出語的習(xí)語表現(xiàn)出的各種不同的文化特征的問題。中西文化的差異導(dǎo)致對習(xí)語理解上的障礙，以致出現(xiàn)三種翻譯錯誤，產(chǎn)生語義非等值:文化信息錯譯、文化信息欠額和文化信息超額。

文化信息錯譯即錯誤地傳達(dá)了習(xí)語的文化信息，是譯文讀者對文化內(nèi)涵習(xí)語產(chǎn)生錯誤的聯(lián)想意義。例如，有人將“三十六計，走為上策”譯為“Ofthethirty-sixstrate-gies,thebestistoquit"。如果了解該習(xí)語的歷史文化背景，就可以知道這種譯文是錯誤的。“走為上策”是計策的名字，是三十六計的最后一計，說的是處在劣勢的時候，“走”是上策，并不是說“走”是三十六計中最好的或最高明的一計。正確的譯文應(yīng)該是"Thebestthingtodonowistoquit",

文化信息欠額是指譯文沒有揭示出原語符號所提供的文化信息。例如，“布衣蔬菜”在中國標(biāo)志著生活儉樸。但在英美國家，蔬菜并非窮人專用，而是西方醫(yī)生給飲食過量的百萬富翁開的藥方。因此，將其譯為“wearcottonclothesandeatvegetablefood”不能體現(xiàn)出原文所含的文化信息，容易使譯文讀者對譯文產(chǎn)生錯誤的聯(lián)想意義，導(dǎo)致理解上的偏差。因此((漢英辭典》(CED)譯為“coarseclothesandsimplefare"。

文化信息超額則指譯文提供了原文所不具有的文化信息。例如英國翻譯家DavidHawkes在翻譯《紅樓夢》中劉姥姥說的話“謀事在人，成事在天”時，將其譯為“Manpro-poses,Goddisposes"，盡管譯語流暢，符合英語行文習(xí)慣，然而超出了原語“成事在天”的“天”一詞的文化內(nèi)涵。劉姥姥是中國人，在Hawkes的筆下卻成了基督教徒，顯然與原文不符，應(yīng)該將“God”換成“Heaven"，這樣，既符合劉姥姥的身份，英語國家的讀者也看得懂。(朱耀先，1997:4)

三、跨越習(xí)語翻譯障礙的途徑

1、直譯

直譯是指按原來的意義和結(jié)構(gòu)直接把原語的詞句轉(zhuǎn)換成譯語的詞句。(周流溪,1995;632)在古典名著《紅樓夢》的不同譯本中.楊憲益及其夫人所譯的譯文充分體現(xiàn)了中國的文化特質(zhì)。如“真是‘天有不測風(fēng)云，人有旦夕禍福’……”，楊先生將其譯為“Truly，`Stormsgatherwithoutwarninginnature.andbadluckbefallsmenovernight"''''，充分保留了源語文化因素，保持了原文想象生動和獨特的民族風(fēng)格。漢語中也不乏外語直接譯人的習(xí)語，如，"mldway''''''''(冷戰(zhàn))，"Timeismoney"(時間就是金錢)，"astickandcarrotpolicy"美國的大棒加胡蘿卜政策),"AllroadsleadtoRome"(條條大陸通羅馬)。直譯可以傳播源語文化，并豐富目的語的表達(dá)方式。不過需要注意的是.直譯時不能生搬硬套，應(yīng)該做到以不引起目的語讀者誤讀誤解為前提。

2、意譯

意譯即著眼于傳達(dá)原文意義的翻譯。(周流溪,1995)勞隴先生認(rèn)為，翻譯就是意譯;維奈和達(dá)見爾內(nèi)提倡的“間接翻譯”也即意譯。如，“走狗，，可譯為“anevilfollower"。又如，克林頓在訪華的演說辭中曾巧妙地引用了中國的成語“實事求是":seekingtruthfromfacts。翻譯，無論是漢譯外，還是外譯漢，需要意譯時，我們必須根據(jù)源語民族的文化傳統(tǒng)、心理積淀來理解、把握，不能按照自己母語的慣性思維進(jìn)行類推，否則便會造成誤解，導(dǎo)致翻譯中出現(xiàn)敗筆。

3、直譯加注

直譯加注的方法在論及翻譯方法的專著中很少提及，或未將其作為一種獨立的方法列舉出來。但是筆者認(rèn)為，為使文化色彩濃厚的習(xí)語由源語進(jìn)人譯人語，并保持音、形、義、美的和諧統(tǒng)一，直譯加注的方法不失為一種較佳方法。如，"Oheart,losenotthynature;letnitever.ThesoulofNeroenterthisfirmbosom.”(Shakespeare:Ham-let)心啊!不要失去你的天性之情，永遠(yuǎn)不要讓尼祿的靈魂潛人我這堅定的胸懷。(朱生豪譯《哈姆萊特》)

“尼祿”是誰?為什么Shakspeare在此用這個詞?為了使目的語讀者能了解西方的文化，譯者在譯文中保留了原文的字面意義的同時，用腳注的形式對其加以診釋，即“尼祿，曾謀殺其母”。這一注解診釋了該典故的由來，目的語讀者通過此典故的提示，便可以理解Hamlet既恨其母負(fù)情負(fù)義，卻又不愿軾之的矛盾心理。
