一、 句子中有施動者的情況
在漢語被動句中的"被""讓""叫""給"等短語和英語被動句中的"by"引導的短語,都有著相同的語法作用,就是引出施事者。例如:
錢包被他拿走了。
(施動者是"他")
He was beaten by his father.
他被父親打了。(施動者是"his father"。)
(一) 二者在句子中的位置不同
"被""讓""叫""給"等短語和"by"引導的短語都在句子當中充當狀語成分,一般情況下,現代漢語中狀語的位置會出現在主語之后,包括"被""讓""叫""給"等及其短語結構。例如:
我被老師狠狠地批評了。("被老師"放在主語"我"之后。)
在英語中,句子的表達、構成則跟漢語不一樣,謂語動詞在句子中充當了最重要的成分,作為修飾成分的狀語可以放在句子的前面也可以放在句子的后面,不拘一格。例如:

在這里如果不出現施事賓語"人",句子也是成立的,可以寫成"小樹被齊刷刷砍倒一片。"
英語句子中的介詞"by"和賓語有著很強的粘著性,不能分開,當英語被動句中的施事者不需要指出或無法指出的時候,施事者就不必在句子中出現,因此,介詞"by"也一定不會在句子中出現。例如:
I was beaten by him.
我被他打了。
(三)句法地位不同
上文中指出,在英語中,by短語在整個句子中充當的是修飾謂語動詞的狀語成分,因此英語的被動句中可以有by短語,也可以沒有by短語,對句子的影響不大,除非是句子需要特別強調by what/who(被什么、被誰等),否則by短語都可以不在被動句中出現。在現代漢語中"被""讓""叫""給"等字或短語中的"被""讓""叫""給"是句子之所以稱之為被動句的形式標志,如果去掉"被""讓""叫""給"等字或短語,余下的句子不僅不會是被動句,甚至表達的意義也會完全不同了,因此絕對不能去掉。例如:

由以上三點可以看出,現代漢語中的"被""讓""叫""給"等短語在被動句中不可或缺,而英語中的by短語可有可無。然而,前文也有所交代,如果句子需要特別強調by what/who(被什么、被誰等)這部分時,by短語就不能省略,它必須出現,而且是句子的重要語義點。例如:
He was murdered by his wife.
他被他妻子謀殺了。(殺他的人是他的妻子,而不是別人。)
無論是英語中的書面語被動句還是口頭表達中的被動句,對其中施事者出現的規律可歸納如下:

二、 句子中沒有施動者的情況
在現代漢語及英語句子當中都存在著不出現施動者的被動結構,那么,英語中的這種結構就是由"be/get(系動詞)+V-en(動詞的過去分詞)"構成的,但不出現by短語,而在現代漢語中也有著不使用"被""叫""讓""給"等明確表示被動情況的字或短語,但在這種情況下,施動者還是會出現的。例如:
The president was shot dead.
總統被射殺了。(具體是誰射殺的沒有出現。)
這棟大樓是一位著名的建筑師設計的。
在有標志的英語被動句中,如果沒有出現by短語用來表明施動者的時候,大多數情況是泛指,而有的時候是無法說出或者很難說出施動者。在現代漢語的被動句中,如果不出現施動者,則說明是泛指。如果是某一個人所為,那么通常加施動者。
例如:
